Letter from Our CEO
Ruby Cup was born out of a desire for change.
In 2011, three young women decided to make the most sustainable period solution (aka the menstrual cup) available to everyone.
After learning that as many as 500 million people across the globe lack access to safe menstrual products and hygienic bathroom facilities, they decided to create Ruby Cup – a company, product and business model designed to revolutionise the menstrual care industry. One of our earliest innovations was the Ruby Cup Buy One Give One program. For every Ruby Cup purchased, we donate another to someone without access to safe period products. Since 2012, we’ve partnered with international organizations like CARE International, Save the Children and UNHCR. To this day, over 150,000 Ruby Cups have been donated worldwide, from Nairobi to Berlin, from London to Medellín. Knowing that giving our program participants the right education was equally important, we developed open-source menstrual health education curriculums. This means that everyone who receives a Ruby Cup gains not only a product, but also the knowledge to manage their period health confidently. In our continued commitment to providing sustainable, reliable and comfortable period care, we introduced Flow Freedom period underwear to our range. For every pair sold, we proudly donate 2% of the revenue to our Learning Centre nursery based in Kisumu. We built the nursery with our long time partners, Golden Girls Foundation – the centre not only nurtures young minds and promotes a love for learning, but also gives their mothers the chance to work and gain financial independence. To date, our efforts have saved over 15K tons of plastic waste from ending up in landfills. With every purchase, we’re making sustainable period care more accessible and mainstream. None of this would be possible without you – our customers – and our partners. So, a big heartfelt thank you from all of us at Ruby Cup. While we’ve achieved so much, there’s still a long way to go in our fight for period equality and for a cleaner, greener planet. I’m confident that together, we’ll continue to make a lasting impact for years to come.
2011: The Ruby trinity
Three period-positive pioneers – Julie, Maxie, and Veronica – set out to make sustainable period care available to everyone, everywhere. shared a bold vision: to end period poverty.
Discovering that 500 million people worldwide lacked access to safe period care, they knew something had to change. So, they created Ruby Cup. With period equality in mind, our founders packed their bags and moved to Kenya to carry out first-hand market research.
2012: Buy One, Give One
After exploring different business models, we (the Ruby team) landed on something powerful: the Buy One, Give One initiative. Launched in 2012, it’s as simple as it is impactful – every time you buy a Ruby Cup, another one is donated to someone in need. Alongside every cup donation, came education on how to use it with confidence. Period care that pays it forward.
Pending months of market research and testing different prototypes, the first shipping of Ruby Cups lands in Nairobi, Kenya. A milestone moment in Ruby history.
2015: Hola, Barcelona
Our first office space in Barcelona officially opens!
2016: Partnership #1
We join forces with Putali Nepal in Asia, the first (of many) partnerships – and one that’s still going today!
2018: More than donations
Having developed the Buy One, Give One program, we realized that donating a cup and providing training on how to use it wasn’t enough – it had to go beyond that. So, we got to work on something even bigger: continuous education and ongoing support around menstrual health.
We developed workshops and partnered with NGOs to offer mentorships. These programs made sure that every Ruby Cup user around the world had access to safe period care as well as the means to learn about their body and gain tools to make informed choices. We also built a comprehensive training toolkit to share with our partners and other organisations that work in menstrual health. And yes, all these programs are still going strong today!
2018: Good for you, good for the planet
We receive our official registration with The Vegan Society in our commitment to putting you and the planet before everything. Sustainability is at the core of everything we do. And it’s not just a buzzword. By choosing our planet-friendly products, you’ve helped us keep over 3,600+ tons of plastic waste out of landfills. Impressive, right?
2023: Landing in Latin America
We proudly establish our first donation partnership in Latin America, with Tiempo de Juego in Colombia.
2023: Flow Freedom
We know period cups aren't for everybody. That’s why we introduced Ruby Cup Underwear – our sustainable solution to conventional pads. Unlike single-use pads, our reusable period pants are designed to keep you living life, leak-free. Plus, 2% of every sale supports our Learning Centre Nursery in Kisumu, run by our long-time partners, Golden Girls Foundation.
Our nursery nurtures young minds and supports mums by giving them the opportunity to work and gain financial independence, and we’re really, really proud to be working alongside them.
2024: 150,000 Ruby Cups and counting
Since launching Buy One, Give One, we’ve partnered with global organizations like Save the Children, CARE International, and UNHCR. Donating over 150,000 Ruby Cups across the globe – from Nairobi to Berlin, London to Medellín – our primary mission is to end period poverty, one cup at a time. And we’re not stopping there…
Today + beyond
Our ultimate goal is to donate 1 million Ruby Cups and promote healthy and sustainable periods to people worldwide – because that’s what everyone deserves. And we can’t do it without your help. Join us?
This is a rough idea of what we could do here but I think a company timeline would work really well to tell the story/impact in a narrative way that works to give the reader bitesize bits of key Ruby Cup info.
*It might be nice to add any significant dates into the timeline. First hire (outside of the founders trio), date you launched the Kegel trainer, a big moment/ achievement for the Buy One, Give One initiative, awards etc etc
