We Are

Ruby Cup

Everyone deserves great period

products – we don't just say it,

we do it.

Our Story

Ruby Cup was born out of a desire for change. In 2011, three young women decided to make the most sustainable period solution (aka the menstrual cup) available to everyone.

After learning that as many as 500 million people across the globe lack access to safe menstrual products and hygienic bathroom facilities, they decided to create Ruby Cup – a company, product and business model designed to revolutionise the menstrual care industry

One of our earliest innovations was the Ruby Cup Buy One Give One programme. For every Ruby Cup purchased, we donate another to someone without access to safe period products.

Since 2012, we’ve partnered with organizations like CARE International, Save the Children, and UNHCR, donating over 150,000 Ruby Cups worldwide—from Nairobi to Berlin, London to Medellín.

We know that education is just as important as the product itself, which is why we provide open-source menstrual health curriculums. Every person who receives a Ruby Cup gains not only a product but also the knowledge to manage their period with confidence.

In 2023, we expanded our range to include period underwear. For every pair sold, 2% of the revenue is donated to our Learning Centre nursery in Kisumu, Kenya, built with our long-term partners, Golden Girls Foundation. The center not only nurtures young minds but also empowers mothers to work and gain financial independence.

Our Mission

  • Periods shouldn’t stop anyone from living their best life. We break down barriers for people with periods everywhere, providing sustainable, premium products that create real social impact.

  • Designed for you, made-green for the planet. Because as pioneers in period care, that’s the least we could do.

WHY

Every day around the world, 800 million people are menstruating. Millions of them are unable to afford period products or manage their menstruation safely due to a lack of proper handwashing or sanitation facilities, or lack of access to period products. On top of this, people are not often taught about menstruation sufficiently and are even shamed for their natural bodily functions.

Period poverty persists in the world, and it’s not just a problem that exists in low and middle-income countries.

We believe that everyone deserves to manage their period with dignity and that the ability to experience a dignified and safe, hygienic period should be considered essential for a human’s experience.

WHERE

Our Buy One, Give One initiative started in 2012, bringing period cups to girls at schools in East Africa. Now we’re donating Ruby Cups in 17 countries across 4 continents.

HOW

Every time you buy a Ruby Cup, we donate one to someone in need. But donating is just the beginning. Real change comes with education and support.

We work with locally-based partners who understand their communities’ cultures, systems, and challenges. After careful vetting, we:

  1. Train trainers to conduct workshops and distribute cups.
  2. Monitor their first batch of Ruby Cups and evaluate impact.
  3. Continue partnerships based on results.

Through this process, we have built a network of ongoing partnerships that make a lasting difference.

In 2013, we partnered with the Golden Girls Foundation to support girls from underprivileged communities in Kenya. What began as a mission to distribute menstrual cups and provide education in Nairobi quickly expanded to Masogo village in Kisumu, where our collaboration helped establish a learning center.

Today, the center:

  • Supports 200+ children
  • Employs 20 local women as teachers and mentors
  • Provides a safe, empowering space for kids and working mothers

We donate 2% of our period underwear revenue to the center, helping shape a brighter future for the next generation.

Our Commitment To The Planet

At Ruby Cup, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Our products are designed to reduce waste, lower your carbon footprint, and make eco-friendly period care accessible to everyone.

Every Ruby Cup replaces around 2,000 disposable period products and can be used for up to 10 years — dramatically reducing the amount of pads and tampons that end up in landfills. Together with our period underwear, Ruby Cup users have already prevented over 15,000 tons of plastic waste from polluting the planet.

Disposable period products are a major contributor to waste and emissions:

Choosing reusable products isn’t just better for you,  it’s better for the planet.
